Prep Time 15 minutes mins
Cook Time 1 hour hr 15 minutes mins
- 1 angel food cake either store-bought or made from a boxed mix, cooled
- 1 can of cherry pie filling 540 ml, 18 oz
- 1 package of 4-serving instant vanilla pudding mix 102 g, 3.6 oz
- 1½ cups of 2% milk
- 1 cup of sour cream
- 8 oz of Cool Whip
- Sliced almonds for optional garnish
Cut the cooled angel food cake into 1-inch cubes.
Place half of the cake cubes evenly in the bottom of a 9×9 cake pan (either metal or glass).
Spread ⅔ of the cherry pie filling evenly over the cake.
Layer the remaining half of the cake cubes on top of the cherry pie filling.
In a medium bowl, combine the pudding mix, milk, and sour cream, stirring until smooth (about 2 minutes). Spread this mixture evenly over the cake.
Top the pudding layer with Cool Whip, spreading it out evenly. Drop and spread the remaining cherry pie filling over the Cool Whip.
Refrigerate for 4 to 5 hours before serving.
If desired, sprinkle slivered almonds on top before serving.
If you're baking the cake yourself for this recipe, be sure to let it cool completely before cutting to prevent warming the other ingredients.
For cutting angel food cake, a serrated knife is the best option, as it will slice through the cake more easily without disrupting its airy, fluffy texture.
If you're serving this at a potluck and have a trifle bowl, it’s a great choice to showcase the beautiful layers of the dessert.
Allow the cake to chill in the fridge for at least 4 to 5 hours so the layers can absorb all the flavors—overnight is even better.
