Ingredients

  • 1 lb uncooked penne
  • 1 Tbsp olive oil
  • 1 lb lean ground beef
  • 1/2 medium onion chopped
  • 1 garlic clove minced
  • 1.5 cups marinara sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1.5 cups shredded cheddar cheese

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 400°F, placing the rack in the middle. Grease a 9x13 baking dish.
  • In a large pot of salted water, cook penne for 10 minutes until slightly underdone to avoid mushiness in baking.
  • In a skillet over medium-high heat, sauté olive oil, beef, and onion for about 10 minutes, breaking up the meat. Add garlic once the beef starts cooking. Drain excess fat if needed.
  • Stir in marinara sauce, heating it through. Taste and adjust salt and pepper.
  • Drain pasta and add it to the baking dish. Pour beef mixture over the pasta and mix to combine. Spread an even layer of cheddar cheese on top. For an extra cheesy result, stir in an additional 1/2 cup of cheese before topping.
  • Bake uncovered for 10 minutes until cheese melts. For a browned top, broil briefly if desired. Serve immediately.
